D’Angelico Quality in a Smaller Semi-hollow

The D’Angelico Excel Mini DC is a highly playable semi-hollowbody electric guitar with killer tone and eye-popping visuals. The Excel Mini DC’s smaller semi-hollow maple body is extremely comfortable and yields a bright, rich, resonant sound with loads of bite and sustain, while a solid center block ensures a feedback-free performance. Equipped with a pair of Seymour Duncan’s acclaimed ’59 humbuckers, the Excel Mini DC serves up a banquet of tone for every occasion, from jazzy cleans to full shred. Navigating this guitar’s comfortable, fast 3-piece C-shaped neck is effortless, as your fingers dance on the smooth-as-glass ebony fingerboard. The Excel Mini DC boasts high-end aesthetic touches such as mother-of-pearl Split Block fingerboard inlays, multi-ply binding and tortoise pickguard, a unique Skyscraper truss rod cover, and elegant gold hardware. If you’re on the hunt for a cross-genre do-it-all semi that will ace any live gig or studio session, the D’Angelico Excel Mini DC deserves your serious consideration.

Reduced-size body, fast 3-piece neck, and silky fingerboard

Playing the D’Angelico Deluxe Excel Mini DC is sheer joy. It features a reduced-size laminated maple body with a solid center block for maximum tone and sustain. Its 3-piece maple/walnut neck boasts a comfortable C profile, and its satin finish supplies the perfect blend of grip and ease of movement. Its 16"-radius fingerboard features 22 medium-jumbo frets. This silky smooth ebony fretboard enables comfortable chording while facilitating technically demanding leads. The instrument’s easy hand feel is a byproduct of its 24.75" scale length, which makes bends and vibrato feel effortless, while its double cutaway body shape gives you optimized high-register access. For rock-solid tuning stability, the Excel Mini DC is equipped with Grover Super Rotomatic tuners, while a GraphTech TUSQ nut bolsters sustain and eliminates string binding.

Seymour Duncan ’59 pickups deliver holy grail humbucking tone

The D’Angelico Excel Mini DC comes loaded with a set of Seymour Duncan ’59 humbuckers. The ’59 is Duncan’s take on the legendary Seth Lover PAF (Patent Applied For) humbucker. This vintage-inspired pickup is a great all-rounder that delivers warm, full-bodied humbucking tone with crystalline clarity. This potent sonic elixir is routed through a 3-way toggle switch and per-pickup volume and tone controls. For maximum tonal versatility, the tone pots are push/pull, giving you access to a range of snappy single-coil sounds. From jazz and fusion to blues, rock, and country; from chimey rhythm parts to blistering leads — and everything in between — the D’Angelico Excel Mini DC delivers.

The D’Angelico legacy

After mastering his craft during an 18-year apprenticeship, luthier John D’Angelico opened his own shop in Manhattan’s Little Italy in 1932. Catering to New York’s many jazz musicians over the ensuing three decades, D’Angelico and a single apprentice became New York’s foremost stringed instrument builders, creating over one thousand treasured archtop guitars until John’s death in 1964. After his passing, the D’Angelico’s legacy lived on only through his rare, legendary instruments. After decades, the D’Angelico brand has resurfaced, bringing back the playability and attention to detail of the company’s New York roots. Today, Sweetwater is delighted to offer this fine line of distinguished instruments. D’Angelico uses state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and the finest available materials to create playable works of art for today’s guitarist. From a modest shop in Little Italy to the world stage, D’Angelico’s dedication to quality craftsmanship ensures that this brand won’t be going dormant again any time soon.

Pure craftsmanship!

You only have to look at this instrument, pick it up and get a little used to playing it, to realize just how remarkable the craftsmanship is. As easy on the eyes as it is to play! D'Angelico doesn't quite have the name recognition as Fender or Gibson, but in my opinion, it should have. It's right up there with the best. I think of mine as a cousin to my Ibanez LGB 30 hollow body, which is pretty strictly a jazz instrument, while the Mini DC will swing with jazz and a lot more, with the push-pull coil splitting. My only regret is that it doesn't come in sage green (mine's the vintage natural), which would make it near to perfection. (But then you can't have everything!) Oh yeah...one caveat...it's really, really neck heavy. When on a strap, you need to keep it in hand or it wants to dive for the floor. A little awkward but not enough to knock it out of the five-star category.(Perhaps many semi-hollows share this trait...)

Even its hard-shell case reflects the care that D'Angelico put into its production. Just lovely all around!

This one’s a keeper!

I'm a short guy with smaller hands so this body size is perfect for me, and the neck and action play so comfortably it's incredible. Or maybe you're a regular size guy that just wants a lighter guitar around your neck during those long gigs. Also, the appearance, fit, and finish of this guitar are outstanding, so much so I could compare this axe to ones costing a thousand dollars more. Up close, it's beautiful! Also the range of tones is exceptional given the ability to split the humbuckers. For rock, blues, or jazz it's a very versatile guitar that is gorgeous to look at. It makes you want to pick it up and play it every time you walk by. At this price point, you absolutely cannot go wrong.

D'Angelico Excel Mini DC: THE semi-hollow to complete any guitarist's collection

I've always been partial to semi-hollow guitars and was looking to replace my Epiphone Lucille, which I loved, with something lighter. At 65 and with back issues weight is a key factor for me when standing with a guitar for the duration of a gig or rehearsal. at 7 pounds 1 ounce the D'Angelico is about 2 lbs. lighter than the Lucille. It also has one of the most comfortable necks of all the guitars I've ever played. With the natural finish I chose, this guitar has look reminiscent of a vintage instrument of years past. On to the sound: sporting two humbuckers and a volume, tone and coil tap (built into the volume knob) for each pickup, the guitar suits and genre you can throw at it. At a band rehearsal last night we covered everything from 50's to country, Beatles, T. Rex and more with me on this guitar. My bandmates were more than happy with the tones I was pulling out of this thing! And I wasn't wincing under the weight of the guitar. Kudos to D'Angelico for producing such a fine instrument and thanks as always to Tim Holsinger at Sweetwater for his speedy and always-top-notch service.

Wonderful guitar..

Got this recently after looking for a smaller body 335 style. Chose this one after playing 3 or 4 others including a smaller bodied Gibson. I found this to one be head and shoulders above the others. Love the coil tapping ability as it greatly adds to its versatility. Quality build, plays like butter and nice and lightweight. Beautiful as well. This ones a keeper. Does all the musical genres I play just fine.. Thanks to my man Greg Baum for finding me this one...

Best investment I have made in a guitar

I'm a professional composer, songwriter, producer, session guitar player, and play in 2 bands. I have guitars by PRS, Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Fender. I absolutely never write reviews. This guitar is the best thing I have ever bought. Every thing about this is amazing. The legendary history of the brand, the quality of the build, The smaller size of the body, the choice of pickups and hardware, coil splitting, the choices of wood and finish, the craftsmanship and presentation, the details everywhere, the price, the sound, all of it. Sweetwater gave me the best deal ever shoutout Aaron Reginald. I have played Gibson ES 335 and many other guitars of the same quality details and the price is 2500-4000 dollars. I will be able to use this guitar professionally in the studio and stage, and my kids will learn to play on it. This will be hanging in my studio when I'm old still looking incredible and sounding great. All around class. This company and this deal and these people are the best experience I have had buying an instrument. But these before this company prices goes up because they will not keep these this price forever. There is not way. All my love to D'Angelico and sweetwater.
