This Soapbar-loaded SG Really Wails

This distinguished Epiphone looks to Gibson's '60s-era, dual-soapbar-equipped SG Special for style and sound cues. The Epiphone SG Special comes loaded with a set of P-90 Pro pickups based on Seth Lover's iconic single-coil design. As fans of the style know, these pickups dish out serious attitude pushed into gain and a velvety smoothness with the knobs rolled back. The SG's flat-topped double-cut mahogany body provides the perfect foundation for the P-90 Pros to work their magic. Epiphone's '60s SlimTaper mahogany neck supplies ample comfort and sustain in the hand. And 1960s Gibson-styled hardware — a Lightning Bolt wraparound bridge and ivory-buttoned Epiphone tuners — endows the Epiphone SG Special with classic SG looks and modern performance.

Based on the legendary SG Special

Epiphone's SG Special resurrects a rock icon. Immortalized by Santana at Woodstock and smashed onstage by Townshend at Leeds, the 1960s Gibson SG Special stands alone in its contributions to rock 'n' roll. The same style and protestant tone lives on today in the Epiphone SG Special. This SG is the real deal, giving you genuine P-90 crunch and a tapered neck that's satisfying to get your hand around. The SG's lightweight mahogany body gives you great sustain and no pain, even if you play all night. Own your own piece of rock history: check out the Epiphone SG Special from Sweetwater.

1960s SlimTaper neck profile — a fan favorite

Players worldwide appreciate Epiphone's 1960s SlimTaper neck profile for its fast touch and smooth playability. SlimTaper necks are thinner than their '50s-style counterparts and manage to supply palpable sustain and all-night comfort wherever you play out.

Epiphone P-90 Pro pickups

We have many fiercely loyal P-90 fans here at Sweetwater. These guitarists know that P-90 pickups offer a unique tonal palette that is distinct from — and complements — humbuckers and traditional single-coils. Epiphone's P-90 Pro soapbars are heavily inspired by Seth Lover's original designs. These pickups are super-versatile and supply their own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker, and almost as hot. Hit your amp hard, and the P-90 Pros really wail. Plugged into a proper high-gain tube amp, you can elicit grind, sizzle, and bark that would be impossible to achieve with other pickup types. If you're an SG lover looking for unique mid-roads tones at a great price, the Epiphone SG Special is one to keep your eye on.

  • '60s SlimTaper mahogany neck supplies ample comfort and sustain in the hand
  • P-90 Pro soapbar pickups exhibit a distinctive growl and wide tonal range

Excellent choice, way better than the money spent!

I was looking for a guitar with P90 pickups and had my eyes upon a few models and brands, ranging up to 1000 USD. I was lucky enough to get the EpiP90 last year in May-June, for an even better price than now - but I would spend again the entire money because it is worth it. I listened, as always, the advice of Erick Molenaar & his team @Sweetwater, and settled for this model.
Came with an extremely good setup, the whole profi package from Sweetwater. Almost a year later - still very happy. Plays great and sounds the way I wished. Always consider that yes, you can make improvements in time, if you wish to invest in it, but all in all it is an excellent guitar right away ready to rock.
I know how to upgrade parts on my guitars (and all my 9 axes are modified to suit my taste or simply to drive my wife nuts), but as for now I didn't have the time to work on it, I discovered that actually it may not need changes :))
Good buy, if you want a classy P90 - look no further. But always check withe the guys in Sweetwater if you are in doubt, ask all the questions and you may get an unexpected better idea.

Great guitar! Good job gibson

This guitar sustains really well and sounds great. The pickups sound extremely good for an Epiphone. Most of the other pickups I've had in them were not so good. It plays really well came with nicely polished frets. If you have questions about the pots. The pots that came in mine were CTS pots. The neck shape is very flat but not blocky like some previous epis. tuners blew me away at the quality of them. The only issue that I could see gibson fixing is that real 60s necks are not as flat as gibson makes these guitars. If the necks were a tad bit thicker gibson would have nocked it out of the park

Awesome Guitar

Sweetwater is very professional and they go the extra mile
With communication during and after the sale. The Epiphone SG special with P90 sounds amazing and is sure to fit into anyones budget. I have been playing for over 35 years and I have a couple of high end guitars and the Epiphone SG really shocked me on how good it sounds.

Almost Perfect

First the good: This one sounds amazing. There's nothing like P-90s; all the way up they really scream, but back off the volume and a whole range of additional tone is available. The finish is absolutely gorgeous. And the value is undeniable.

In the "needs improvement" category, let's start with the wraparound bridge. Even with the setscrews all the way out, the intonation is on the high side (with the standard 10-46 strings), but not so much that it's a problem. After all, part of the charm of the guitar itself is that it's always a little bit out of tune (unless you like those weird squiggly frets, of course, but then you'll be out of tune with the rest of the band). I'm thinking about replacing the tailpiece with an adjustable model, and may do so once I decide on a suitable string gauge for this one. The frets are pretty good but not perfect; I'm thinking that a Plek job should be part of all future orders, as this problem is far from unique here.

But that's it. Yes, it' an SG, so it neck-dives. I'm more of a Les Paul guy myself, but the Sparkling Burgundy SG is only Sparkling Burgundy on the top, and this SG sparkles everywhere. Very happy with the purchase, and the great (and fast) service from Sweetwater, as always.

Thinking about an SG? Unless you absolutely want humbuckers and a Tune-O-Matic, you could do far worse that to pick up one of these.

Love this guitar but...

I had to spend some extra cash to get the frets leveled. One star knocked off for this. Wanted a p90 guitar for not too much and now that it plays as well as my les paul, I'm stoked. and even with the extra spent its half the price of a Gibson. Everything else about the guitar was great.
