The Final Word on Leo’s Classic T-style

G&L refers to the Tribute ASAT Classic as the final word on Leo Fender’s traditional single-cutaway bolt-on — a claim that’s hard to dispute once you play it for a while. This solidbody electric guitar is infused with sweet-sounding musicality, thanks to its sassafras body, while its medium "C"-shaped neck and 9.5-inch-radius fingerboard ensure supreme comfort and effortless playability. The ASAT Classic twangs, spanks, and clucks with the best of them, by virtue of its Leo Fender-designed Magnetic Field Design pickups, and when you flip it to the neck position, it churns out round jazz tones like it’s nobody’s business. The G&L Tribute ASAT Classic includes a classic boxed-steel bridge, sealed tuners, and an eye-grabbing gloss neck finish and 1-ply pickguard.

Sassafras body yields a gorgeous musical tone

The ASAT Classic features a solid sassafras body — a tonewood prized for its musical blend of creamy mids, ample lows, and shimmering highs. This electric guitar’s rock-solid maple neck boasts a comfortable medium "C" profile and an easy-playing 9.5-inch-radius fingerboard that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The guitarists here at Sweetwater appreciate the classic playability of the ASAT Classic.

Leo Fender-designed pickups serve up a myriad of sonic textures

You can coax a myriad of sonic textures out of the G&L Tribute ASAT Classic. A pair of Leo Fender-designed single-coil Magnetic Field Design pickups house extra-thick bar magnets that emit ultra-tight magnetic fields. This design produces a massive amount of energy around the coil, ensuring super-strong output and a muscular, percussive attack. The neck pickup is brighter, more powerful, and clearer than traditional alnico T-style neck single-coils, while the bridge pickup offers all the twang, spank, and cluck you can handle. Magnetic Field Design pickups also feature individually adjustable pole pieces to give you complete control over your tone. Whether you’re craving crisp, complex harmonics or smooth, round jazz tones, the ASAT Classic will do it.

Leo's favorite creations

After founding two hugely successful guitar brands and consulting on the side, Leo Fender felt that he had unfinished business in the guitar world. Together with partner George Fullerton, G&L opened for business in 1979 and incorporated innovative design elements into their instruments, such as the Magnetic Field Design pickups, Dual-Fulcrum Vibrato, Saddle-Lock Bridge, and Bi-cut neck design. Leo was so proud of his new instruments that he famously declared that G&L's "are the best instruments I have ever made." Play a G&L today and experience the magic for yourself.

Fantastic guitar but set up is needed.

Ok. First things first. I love this guitar and I have many more expensive ones to choose from. I've had this one for a month and I don't think my Strat or Les Paul have been of off the wall hangers since I've got it. That will change I'm sure, but I am smitten with it. Sweetwater did their job going through the guitar. The intonation was spot on! However, the initial set up from the factory is less than desirable, at least in my case. I've been doing this for years so it was no big deal to go through and set it up properly. If you're not guitar tech savvy and your guitar doesn't play as expected, you'll need to get setup by a tech. Once you do, you will love this guitar, if you already don't. I've compared this guitar to 2003 American Fat Tele and an American Standard. This difference was negligible at best. They guy that owned both of them played this guitar and said he loved everything about it except for the .09 gauge strings. When I told him they were .10s, his mouth dropped. The bottom line is that this guitar sounds great and plays fantastic with a proper setup. The pickups in this guitar are awesome and set up properly it will keep up with the best of them. A bargain indeed in my opinion.

Just what I was looking for

Tuners are super smooth, easy to turn. Neck has a fast, thinner profile - but no too thin. Frets were nicely dressed on the ends, no sharpies. Nut was filed correctly and set at the proper height for each string. Finish on the neck is satin-like with a vintage amber tone that blends well with the body color. Frets are just right: not to vintage thin or too thick. They're high enough to allow for a few fret redressing's over the years as you wear them down. Body is just great to look at, but the contour makes it so much more comfortable to play. The pick guard is thick. The bridge is a huge seller for me on this guitar. Tuning for intonation can be dialed in and the tonal transfer thru the brass saddles is excellent. Neck to body angle is perfect and allows you plenty of range for string height adjustments. Pickups are rich and clear - I verified that they are indeed the U.S. made pickups. Pickup height was perfectly adjusted right out of the box. The pots are the usual import version that are just a tad too hard to turn - higher friction than I like. Also, the three-way selector feels a bit rubbery when switching it. But - the tones are amazing. The only upgrade I may ever do to this guitar is new pots and switch. That's my only gripe about this guitar. I haven't been able to put it down for the last 7 days now. I'm playing thru a Fender Champ 5 watt clone. With the amp on 10, I can easily control everything from the guitar. It cleans up nice and can get raunchy too, but to my ears it very much retains the twangy spirit of the Telecaster, but with more tonal options. I'm super pleased and I highly recommend this guitar!

Great guitar

As long as your expectations are in line with the price, it's a great guitar. No, it's not built to the same level of craftsmanship as a $2k USA model, but you can't expect that. However, mine plays great and sounds beautiful. I will never sell it. I spent some time with micromesh cloth making the neck the smoothness I like and polishing the frets, and now it feels perfect in my hands. I also replaced the pots and switch, and that made a huge difference. I've experimented with different pickups, but after a year of experimentation I switched back to the MFD. To my ears, the bridge pickup is perfect, but the neck is a little warmer than I like. But I've learned to appreciate the unique sound.

What I really love about this guitar is that fact it sounds great, but isn't so precious that I have to baby it. It's really liberating to have a great sounding inexpensive guitar. In fact, I've tried to "improve" upon it by buying better made and more expensive Telecasters. But in the end, I realized I was just wasting money. The others were nicer to look at, but the humble G&L was every bit as fun to play.

So if you are willing to put a little work into the guitar, I think it's worth every penny. Keep your eyes open for a light one and pounce on it. Mine is 7.5 pounds which is perfect for me.

Love My G and L.

Plays like a dream. Leo Fender knew what He was doing with The Telecaster. This is the best Telecaster ever. You can play any kind of music there is and it sounds Great. Country, Rock, Blues. This Guitar can do it all. So treat your self to a great Guitar.

Excellent guitar at this price point!

I purchased this Tribute ASAT Classic back in January of 2023. After much research and review reading, I decided it was worth a go. I have been extremely pleased with practically everything so far. It sounds great and plays well. It has that classic look and vibe, but adds in some nice touches. It was intonated perfectly out of the box, and the 6 barrel bridge design makes that possible. The versatility of the pickups is awesome, and they are pretty hot. The butterscotch blonde is gorgeous and the neck is satiny with nice fretwork. My only complaint, and the only thing that makes it a 4.5 out of 5 rather than a 5 is the selector switch. It is spongy and clunky. If I change out the switch (and maybe the pots) this thing will be fighting way over its weight class.
